Active Ingredients
Each Tablet Contains:
- Sulfamethoxazole – 400 mg
- Trimethoprim – 80 mg
- Total active ingredients – 480 mg
This is the standard 80 mg/400 mg co-trimoxazole strength.
Sulfamethoxazole
Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibacterial that inhibits bacterial folic-acid synthesis.
Trimethoprim
Trimethoprim blocks a subsequent step in bacterial folate metabolism. Combining the two agents produces the characteristic antibacterial action of co-trimoxazole.
Uses
Depending on bacterial susceptibility and local prescribing guidelines, co-trimoxazole may be prescribed for infections including:
- Certain urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Certain respiratory tract infections
- Some gastrointestinal bacterial infections
- Certain skin and soft-tissue infections
- Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) treatment or prevention in appropriate patients
- Other infections caused by susceptible organisms
Antibiotics such as Biseptol do not treat viral infections, including ordinary viral colds or flu.
Directions for Use
Use only as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
The dose and treatment duration depend on the type and severity of infection, age, body weight, kidney function, and individual medical circumstances.
Tablets should be taken with sufficient fluid. Complete the prescribed course unless a healthcare professional instructs otherwise.
Because dosing varies substantially by indication, a fixed universal dosing schedule should not be used for this product.
